Days From Disposal: Stopping the Crush

Only one thing reliably stops a disposal — a completed release. Here's the fastest legal route to one.

From roughly 14 days after the seizure notice, the pound can lawfully dispose of an uncollected vehicle — auction if it has value, crush if it doesn't. Phone calls, promises and part-payments don't pause that power: the only thing that reliably takes a car off the disposal list is a completed release, and the only near-equivalent is asking the operator directly whether they'll hold disposal for a confirmed collection date.

If you're inside the window, run the emergency sequence today: certificate first (emailed within minutes of the 2-minute quote), then ring the pound — confirm the car is still there, state your collection day, ask them to note it — then documents, then travel. If the deadline has already passed, ring anyway before assuming the worst: disposal takes logistics, and cars are often still on site days after they're eligible.

Triage, in order

  1. Confirm status by phone TODAY: is the car still on site, and what is its disposal date?
  2. Buy the 28-day certificate immediately — it's the release blocker you control, valid within minutes.
  3. Tell the pound your confirmed collection day and ask them to note the vehicle for release — most will hold a scheduled collection.
  4. Fees rise with every day (~£26 storage on top of the £192 removal) — but a fee total beats a disposed car.
  5. If disposal already happened: ask what route (auction vs scrap), whether any surplus is due to you, and what fees remain owed.

Will the pound really crush a perfectly good car?

Good cars are usually auctioned rather than crushed — but from your side the outcome is identical: the car is gone, the sale proceeds go against fees, and any shortfall can still be pursued. 'It's worth too much to crush' is not a protection plan.

Can I pay the fees now and collect next week to stop disposal?

Ask the operator — some accept payment plus a booked collection as grounds to hold disposal, others require the full release. Get any agreement noted with a name and time; a verbal maybe is not a hold.

The 14 days passed yesterday — is it definitely gone?

No — eligibility for disposal and actual disposal are different days. Auctions run on schedules and paperwork takes time. Ring the pound first thing, confirm the car is on site, and if it is, execute the release the same day.
