After the Seizure: Deadlines That Decide Your Car's Fate
Two dates on the paperwork decide everything. Miss them and the car stops being yours.
The paperwork after a seizure runs on statutory deadlines, and they're shorter than most people assume. The seizure notice — handed to the driver or posted to the registered keeper — starts the clock. A formal notice to the keeper gives around 7 days to claim the vehicle, and disposal becomes lawful from roughly 14 days after notice: the pound can sell the car at auction or scrap it.
Those are outside limits, not targets to aim at. Storage accrues daily the whole time, auctioned cars routinely fetch less than their owners owed in fees, and a car sold at day 15 is simply gone — no appeal reverses a completed disposal. Treat the notice as a countdown: the earliest release always costs the least and risks nothing.
The timeline in plain terms
- Day 0: seizure. Vehicle recovered to the pound; removal fee incurred; storage starts.
- Days 0–2: seizure notice reaches the driver and/or registered keeper with the pound's details.
- The 7-day letter: the keeper's formal window to claim the vehicle — respond, don't sit on it.
- From ~day 14: disposal is lawful — auction or crush — and accrued fees can still be pursued afterwards.
- Any day before that: release is available with the certificate, documents and fees. Earlier = cheaper.
The notice went to my old address — the clock ran without me knowing. What now?
Contact the police force and the pound immediately, quoting the registration — explain the address issue and ask for the current status. If the car hasn't been disposed of, you can still release it; the address mix-up (usually an out-of-date V5C) is also worth fixing with DVLA the same week.
Can the pound really crush a car worth thousands?
Disposal is usually by auction for cars with value — crush is for low-value vehicles — but either way you lose the car and can still be pursued for the fees. Value doesn't pause the deadline.
Does contacting the pound pause the clock?
No — only the release itself stops storage, and only collection prevents disposal. What contact does buy you is accurate information: exact deadlines for your case, the fee total, and the document list for a single successful visit.
