Your Belongings Are in the Pound. Here's How to Get Them

The car may have to wait for fees and paperwork — your medication, tools and child seat usually don't.

A seized car usually goes to the pound with a life inside it: house keys, medication, a child's car seat, a tradesperson's tools, the wallet you need to pay the release fees. The vehicle itself can only be released with the certificate, documents and fees — but personal property inside it is a different question, and most pounds operate supervised access for exactly this.

Access is discretionary and varies by operator, which makes the phone call decisive: ring the number on the seizure notice, list what you need to retrieve, and ask their process. Bring ID that connects you to the vehicle. Fixed parts of the car — stereo, wheels, accessories — stay with it; loose personal property is what access covers.

How property access works

  1. Ring first: access is by arrangement, not walk-in, at most sites.
  2. Bring photo ID and your connection to the vehicle (keeper documents or the seizure notice).
  3. Retrieval is supervised — you'll be accompanied while collecting items.
  4. Essentials (medication, keys, documents, child seats) are treated most sympathetically; list them when you call.
  5. Work tools locked in a seized work van are a strong access case — say income depends on them.

Can the pound hold my belongings until I pay the fees?

The statutory fees attach to the vehicle, not your personal property. Practice varies on the ground, but a reasonable request for essential items — especially medication or a child seat — is rarely refused outright. If it is, escalate politely to the police force that ordered the seizure.

I literally need my wallet from the car to pay the release. Circular problem?

A common one — and pounds know it. Explain exactly that on the phone: retrieving payment means first is a routine supervised-access request, and it unblocks everything else.

Is it faster to just release the whole car?

Often, yes — if you were releasing it anyway, one visit with the certificate, documents and fees beats a property-access trip plus a release trip, and it stops the daily storage at the same time.
