SP30 is the offence code for exceeding the statutory speed limit on a public road — everything that isn’t a motorway. It’s the most common endorsement on UK licences, usually generated by a fixed or mobile camera followed by a Notice of Intended Prosecution to the registered keeper.

Most SP30s resolve as a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points, or a speed awareness course if the speed was marginal and you haven’t attended one in the last 3 years. But NIPs served late, incorrect vehicle details, unclear signage or contested device readings can all be grounds to challenge — which is why it’s worth a professional look at the paperwork before you accept anything.

What an SP30 typically means

  1. Fixed penalty: £100 fine and 3 penalty points.
  2. Higher speeds: court prosecution, a means-tested fine and 3–6 points or disqualification.
  3. Speed awareness course: offered at the police force’s discretion for marginal speeds — no points, but you pay the course fee.
  4. New drivers: 6 points within 2 years of passing revokes the licence, so a second offence is serious.
  5. The endorsement stays on your driving record for 4 years.

Should I just accept an SP30 fixed penalty?

If the paperwork is sound and the speed is accurate, often yes — but check first. Late NIP service (beyond 14 days), wrong details, or signage and calibration problems can invalidate a ticket, and once you accept the fixed penalty the chance to challenge is gone.

Will an SP30 make my insurance more expensive?

Usually, yes — insurers ask about convictions from the last 4–5 years and a single SP30 typically adds a modest amount to premiums. A course, where offered, avoids both the points and the disclosure.
