The Impounded Car Release Checklist

Pounds turn away incomplete visits every day. Arrive once, with everything, and the release is routine.

Every failed pound visit costs a wasted trip plus another day of storage, and the counter staff have no discretion: the checklist is the checklist. The good news is that it's short, and every item on it is something you can have in hand within an hour of reading this page.

Ring the pound before travelling — the number is on your seizure notice — and confirm their exact list and payment methods. Operators vary slightly on ownership evidence and whether they accept phone-screen documents, and a two-minute call beats a second trip across town.

What to bring — the full list

  1. The seizure notice itself — it identifies the vehicle and the case.
  2. A specialist impound insurance certificate covering the vehicle (28-day minimum term — ours is emailed within minutes of payment).
  3. Photo ID (passport or photocard licence) and your full driving licence.
  4. Proof of ownership: the V5C logbook, or the new-keeper slip plus purchase receipt for a recent purchase.
  5. Payment for the statutory fees — typically £192 removal plus roughly £26 per day of storage; confirm the total and card acceptance when you ring.

My V5C is inside the impounded car — what now?

Tell the pound when you ring: most allow supervised access to retrieve documents from the vehicle before processing the release. Failing that, DVLA can confirm keeper details, and pounds have processes for exactly this situation.

Will a screenshot of the insurance certificate do?

Usually yes — the certificate arrives by email and most pounds accept it on a phone screen. A printout removes all doubt if you have access to a printer, and some operators still prefer paper.

Do I need the car taxed and MOT'd to drive it out?

To drive away legally the car needs to be road-legal — tax and MOT included. If either has lapsed, tax it online before collecting, or arrange to collect by trailer and tell the pound in advance.
