Impound Fees, Explained Properly

Two fees, one deadline, and a total that grows every day — here's the arithmetic before you're standing at the counter.

Pound charges aren't set by the pound — they're statutory, fixed by regulation, and broadly the same across England, Wales and Scotland. For a standard car, that means a removal fee of typically £192 charged once, plus storage of roughly £26 for every day the vehicle is held, counted from the day of seizure. Heavier vehicles sit on a higher scale.

The controllable variable is time. Collect on day one and you pay the removal fee plus a single day's storage; leave it a week and the storage alone adds roughly £180. Leave it past the disposal window — around 14 days from the notice — and the pound can sell or scrap the car, while the accrued fees can still be pursued from the keeper. Nobody beats the meter; people only beat the delay.

What you'll pay, line by line

  1. Removal (one-off): typically £192 for a car under the statutory scale.
  2. Storage (daily): roughly £26 per day, from seizure day until collection day.
  3. The impound insurance certificate: bought from us before you attend — the quote shows your exact premium.
  4. Not chargeable: pounds can't add arbitrary 'admin' or 'release' fees beyond the statutory scale — query anything unlabelled.
  5. After ~14 days: disposal becomes possible, and disposal doesn't wipe the debt — fees can still be pursued.

Can the fees be waived or reduced?

Only in narrow cases — principally where the seizure itself was in error (you were validly insured and can prove it). Hardship doesn't reduce the statutory scale. If the seizure was wrongful, challenge it with the police force with your evidence.

Is it ever rational to abandon the car?

Compare the car's realistic value with removal + accrued storage. But abandonment isn't free: disposal can follow around day 14 and the fees can still be chased. If you're walking away, formally surrender the vehicle to the pound rather than going silent — it caps what accrues.

Do weekends and bank holidays count for storage?

Yes — storage accrues per calendar day, open or closed. A Friday seizure collected Monday is typically billed for the weekend, which is a good reason to buy the certificate and check weekend opening hours the same day.
