Can Someone Else Insure My Impounded Car?

If you can't drive it out — no licence, points, a ban — someone else often can. Here's how it works.

A very common impound problem: the registered keeper can't legally drive the car out — a revoked or provisional licence, a fresh ban, or simply being uninsurable at the roadside — and the pound won't release the vehicle to be driven by someone without cover. The answer is that the impound insurance doesn't have to be in the keeper's name: another eligible driver can take out the certificate on the vehicle and drive it out.

The paperwork stays keeper-centric though: pounds normally require the registered keeper to attend (or give documented authority) with the ownership documents, while the insured driver handles the actual driving. Ring the pound first and confirm their exact requirements for a two-person release — every operator has a process for it.

The workable combinations

  1. Keeper attends with documents + an insured full-licence holder drives the car out — the standard pattern.
  2. The keeper insures and collects personally — simplest, where their licence allows it.
  3. Collection by trailer or transporter — no driver insurance needed for the tow, but the release paperwork and fees still apply.
  4. A family member both insures and collects with the keeper's written authority — ask the pound what authority document they accept.
  5. What doesn't work: sending someone with no insurance certificate, or a provisional licence holder driving out unsupervised.

I'm banned from driving — can I still get my car back?

Yes. You attend as keeper with ID and ownership documents; a friend or family member with a full licence takes out the impound certificate on the car and drives it away. Alternatively collect it by trailer.

Does the person insuring need to own the car?

No — impound policies are routinely issued to drivers who aren't the registered keeper. The quote asks for the driver's details and the vehicle registration; the pound cares that the driver leaving with the car is insured on it.

Can my friend do the whole thing without me?

Sometimes — with your written authority, your ID copy and the ownership documents, many pounds will process a release to an authorised representative. Confirm the exact authority requirements with the pound named on your notice before they travel.
