Impound Release Insurance for Vans
A seized van usually means lost work income too — get the certificate the pound needs, same day.
When a van is seized under Section 165 the cost runs past the pound fees: every day it sits in storage is a day of lost jobs, deliveries or tools locked inside. And the statutory fee scale is weight-based — vans over 3.5 tonnes attract substantially higher removal and storage charges than cars, so delay is more expensive in a van than in anything else.
Pounds release only against specialist impound insurance, and our 28-day certificate covers light commercial vehicles through the same panel as cars. Quote in about 2 minutes with the registration; the certificate is emailed the same day, so most vans are back on the road — and back at work — within a day.
Van seizures — what's different
- Statutory fees scale with vehicle weight — heavier vans cost more per day than the ~£192 + ~£26/day car rates.
- Tools and stock locked in a seized van: ask the pound about access to contents before release — policies vary.
- Business-registered keepers: bring evidence of the company's entitlement plus your own ID and licence.
- The 28-day certificate covers the van after release while you arrange annual cover.
- Disposal is possible from around 14 days — for a working van, act the same day.
My work van was seized — can I get my tools out before I release it?
Many pounds allow supervised access to retrieve personal property, but it's discretionary — ring the number on the seizure notice before travelling. Releasing the van promptly is usually simpler than negotiating access.
Are the pound fees higher for a van?
For vans over 3.5t, yes — the statutory scale steps up with weight, and storage per day rises with it. Under 3.5t the standard car-level charges typically apply. Either way the daily meter only stops when you collect.
The van is registered to my company — who attends the pound?
The person collecting needs their own ID and licence, the impound certificate, and evidence of the company's ownership (V5C in the company name plus authority to collect). Ring the pound first — they'll list exactly what they accept.
