Check a Car's Plate Change History

A private plate explains most changes. Two changes around a keeper switch is the pattern worth questioning.

Registration plates change hands constantly and innocently — private plates are bought, sold and moved between cars all the time, and most plate-change history means nothing more than that. The exception is when a plate change lines up with a keeper change on a car with other flags in its history, which is the classic pattern used to give a stolen or cloned car a fresh-looking identity.

My car's had a private plate on it for years — is that a problem?

No — that's the ordinary case, and the report will simply show the change on record with its date. It only becomes worth questioning when a change lines up suspiciously with other flags, like a keeper change or a stolen marker.
