BMW Vehicle History Check
High values, high finance, high theft rates — the three reasons a used BMW needs a £3 check most.
BMWs concentrate all three of the big used-car risks. They're expensive, so most were bought on finance and plenty still carry it. They're desirable, so keyless-relay thieves target them and stolen examples resurface with new plates. And they're costly to repair, so insurers write them off readily — meaning more Cat S and Cat N cars back in circulation than the badge's image suggests.
Our £3 check addresses each one: outstanding finance agreements, the police stolen marker, write-off category and date, plus keeper history, plate changes, scrapped status, MOT, tax and a retail valuation. Two minutes with the registration before you view saves the expensive kind of surprise.
What to check on a used BMW
- Outstanding finance — premium PCP volumes mean a meaningful share of used BMWs still carry agreements.
- Stolen marker + recent plate changes together — the classic disguise pattern for relay-theft cars.
- Write-off category — high repair costs push borderline BMWs into Cat S/N more often than cheaper brands.
- Keeper history — quick flips on a premium car deserve hard questions.
- Valuation — the retail figure in the report keeps the negotiation honest.
What's keyless relay theft and why does it matter to me as a buyer?
Thieves amplify the key's signal to unlock and start the car without touching it — BMWs are frequent targets. It matters because stolen cars re-enter the market on changed plates; the £3 check's stolen marker and plate-change history are how a buyer spots it.
The seller says the finance was settled last month — trust it?
Verify it: the check shows agreements recorded against the car. If one still shows, ask for the lender's settlement letter before any money moves — a genuine seller will have it.
Are Cat N BMWs worth buying?
Sometimes — non-structural damage professionally repaired can be good value on a car this expensive to buy clean. The point of the check is knowing it's Cat N before you pay, and pricing accordingly.
