TT99 — Totting-Up Disqualification
12 points in 3 years means an automatic ban — unless you can show exceptional hardship. Act before your court date.
TT99 isn't a driving offence on its own — it's the marker applied when a new endorsement takes your total to 12 or more points within a 3-year period, triggering the totting-up procedure. Once you're at that threshold, magistrates must disqualify you unless you can show the ban would cause exceptional hardship, and the bar for that argument is genuinely high.
The minimum totting-up ban is 6 months, longer for repeat cases within a fixed period. The points themselves stay on your licence for 4 years from the date of each offence, so the run-up to a TT99 is usually visible well in advance — which is exactly when it's worth getting advice, before the next ticket tips you over rather than after.

What counts as exceptional hardship?
More than the ordinary inconvenience every disqualified driver faces — courts look for genuinely exceptional impact, such as loss of livelihood affecting dependants or third parties, not just the driver's own commute. It needs to be evidenced with documents, not just stated in court.
Can I avoid a TT99 by challenging the ticket that tips me over?
If there are genuine procedural or evidential grounds on the newest offence — a late NIP, a signage or device issue — successfully challenging it keeps you under 12 points. That's why the ticket immediately before a totting threshold deserves the closest look, not the least.
How far in advance should I get advice?
As soon as a new ticket could realistically bring you to 12 points. There's more room to build an exceptional hardship case, or challenge the underlying offence, with time on your side than at the court door.
